This two-year course forms part of our suite of Initial Teacher Education for people who would like to teach at secondary level. According to OFSTED, fewer than 25 institutions are ‘outstanding’ in this sector – and Sunderland is one of them.

The first year of this course develops your knowledge in maths so that you are confident in your mastery of the subject. The second year provides the necessary in-school experience in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Comments from the 2011 OFSTED report on our Initial Teacher Education (secondary phase) include the following:

Sunderland has been involved in teacher training since 1908. According to the National Student Survey, 96% of our education students find that staff are good at explaining things and make the subject interesting.

There is a shortage of maths teachers in England, according to the Department of Education. This means that there will be a wide range of opportunities for talented people who decide to teach maths.
