English Education (11-18 yrs) BA (Hons)

UCAS Code: QX13

Duration: 3 years

Intl Fee: £9,500

This three-year course forms part of our suite of Initial Teacher Education for people who would like to teach at secondary level. According to OFSTED, fewer than 25 institutions are ‘outstanding’ in this sector – and Sunderland is one of them.

The first two years of this course develop your subject knowledge and you will study a number of modules that form part of our other English courses. You will also study specialist modules about the teaching of English, such as ‘Literature/Drama in Secondary Schools’.

The final year provides the necessary in-school experience in order to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Most people take at least four years to gain QTS, with a three-year degree then a year’s PGCE. But with this course, you gain QTS in just three years. This represents significant savings in time, course fees and living costs.

Comments from the 2011 OFSTED report on our Initial Teacher Education (secondary phase) include the following:

  • “Trainees’ attainment is outstanding... Employment rates are high”
  • “All aspects of training are highly coherent”
  • “There is a very high level of commitment from all staff”
  • “Strong attention is paid to individual needs”

According to the National Student Survey, 96% of our education students find that staff are good at explaining things and make the subject interesting.
