At Sunderland we encourage students to push the boundaries of illustration. The course blends core modules in design theories with practice-based modules, and traditional techniques with computer technology. Like all our design courses, this course allows you to develop your own style and release your personal creativity. It has core modules in design theories that you will study alongside other design students. It also has practice-based modules that include 'Illustration and Media', 'Computer Illustration', 'Printmaking for Illustration' and 'Sequential, Narrative and Concept Illustration'. Our Design Centre offers high-tech digital resources as well as traditional capabilities. We provide the latest software, generous studio spaces and well-equipped workshops. Sunderland is no.1 in the North East for spend per student in Arts and Design, according to The Guardian University Guide 2012. To increase your real-world experience, the 'Illustrator as Professional' module involves responding to live briefs for national and international competitions. Throughout the course you will build up a portfolio that will help you launch a career as an illustrator or graphic designer, or take up any other roles where creative skills are important. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, the University was recognised as carrying out some 'world-leading' research in Arts and Design. Wherever relevant, this research is fed directly into degree courses.
