Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons)

UCAS Code: H3W2

Duration: 3 or 4 years

Intl Fee: £9,500

Among our engineering and technology graduates who are in employment within six months of graduating, the large majority (85%) are in graduate level jobs (source: Unistats 2012). To maintain and improve this record, we link our course tightly to the needs of potential employers.

Year 1 covers broad areas of engineering and is similar to our other engineering courses. The course then becomes more specialised with modules such as ‘Thermofluids and Engines’, ‘Manufacturing Processes’ and ‘Engineering Dynamics and Strength of Materials’.

We encourage our students to undertake a year-long placement between the second and final years, although it is not compulsory. In the past our students have secured paid placement with companies such as Jaguar, Nissan, GlaxoSmithKline, Assystem, Cummins Engines, Delphi Powertrain Systems and Tata Steel.

The teaching is based on the real-world experience of our staff and it is enriched by the University’s leading-edge research into areas such as manufacturing systems and advanced maintenance.

As a graduate mechanical engineer you will be able to play a major role in design, management and manufacturing in a wide range of industries. These include the power generation, transport and automotive industries.

‌This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as partially fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Accreditation is an assurance that our courses meet the standards set by the Engineering Council. This is the highest level attainable for any undergraduate programme. As well as increased employment potential, graduates from an accredited programme are typically able to fast track the process of achieving CEng status.
