English Language and Linguistics - Combined Subjects

UCAS Code

Q1

Duration

3 or 4 years

The universal importance of language to people's lives and workplaces means that English Language and Linguistics will combine well with any of the other subjects within our Combined Subjects programme.

In contrast to the literature-focused modules in English, modules in this subject are language-focused. Examples of module titles include 'Language and Culture', 'Language and Power' and 'Language and Gender'.

If you are considering a career in teaching, a dual or major route in this subject would provide the subject knowledge that is required to teach English at secondary level after the necessary postgraduate training.

An alternative approach would be to combine this subject with TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This will allow you to develop your personal interest in language while simultaneously developing your capacity to teach English to others.

For those who are not considering teaching, a popular approach is to combine the theory-based modules of English language and linguistics with the practice-based modules of journalism or public relations.

You can choose to spend a third, half, or two thirds of your study time on English language and linguistics. You can combine it with any other subject in the Combined Subjects programme.

Once you have started your course, you will find that our tutors provide a very supportive learning environment. The subject is taught within our Faculty of Education and Society and, according to the Student Experience Survey 2010, 91% of the Faculty’s students would recommend the University of Sunderland to others.
